Physicists Conduct Quantum Teleportation of a Particle of Light

Physics Blog 1

Recently, at the University of Calgary, researchers in the United States and a group of physicists, led by Wolfgang Tittle, collaborated in an experiment that lead to the teleportation of a photon over a straight line distance of six kilometers. This groundbreaking demonstration set a new record for the distance of transferring a quantum state by teleportation. Attracting news sources worldwide, this accomplishment can only lead to future advancements.

What does "quantum" refer to?
"Quantum" is a discrete quantity of energy proportional in magnitude to the frequency of the reaction it represents.

What is quantum physics?
Quantum physics is the idea of modern physics that explains the nature and behavior of matter and energy on the atomic and subatomic level. The nature and behavior at these levels are referred to as quantum physics or quantum mechanics.

Teleportation
The process of quantum teleportation simplified is quantum information (the state of an atom or photon) being transmitted from one location to another, with the collaboration of classical communication and previously shared quantum entanglement between the sending and receiving location. Classical information picks out a definite quantum state, setting a basis for the vector space of all the possible pure quantum states. Quantum entanglement is the physical event that occurs when pairs or groups of particle are created or interact in ways that the quantum state of each particle cannot be different from the the others and is linked no matter the distance apart . Classical communication moves at the maximum speed of light, in this way physicists have found the way to teleport a photon (an elementary particle of light) from one point to another.

How does quantum teleportation work (video)?

The experiment was conducted between the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary's City Hall. As the photons were teleported from the university to the City Hall, one of the photons traveled to the City Hall, while remaining entangled with the photon that stayed at the university. After this occurred, "the photon whose state was teleported to the university was generated in a third location in Calgary, and then also travelled to City Hall where it met the photon that was part of the entangled pair" quotes Science Daily. Tittle explained "what happened is the instantaneous and disembodied transfer of the photon's quantum state onto the rearming portion of the entangled pair, which is the one that remained six kilometers away at the university".

Science Daily writes,"This demonstration is arguably one of the most striking manifestations of a puzzling prediction of quantum mechanics, but it also opens the path to building a future quantum internet, the long-term goal of the Tittel group."
